Kitty cats are on the list of top five favorite pets to own.  To some owners, cats are just as loving and responsive as dogs and will provide endless companionship.  What is great about choosing a cat as a pet is the fact that there are so many breeds to choose from!  For people who might be interested in owning a full breed cat, take a look at the breeds that have been declared the ten favorite cats to welcome into the home

  • The Persian cat has managed to remain in the number one spot for centuries!  These high maintenance cats make up for the expense by being very loyal and affectionate.
  • The Maine coon is an all-American cat that has been the second favorite breed for many years.  For people who like big cats, this is definitely one to have!  Males can weigh up to 18 pounds, while females top off at 14 pounds.  These require less maintenance than the Persian and they are also very loving.
  • The exotic cat is sometimes known as a “Persian in pajamas” because it closely resembles the Persian, just with shorter fur.  They are definitely lower maintenance than the Persian and have great personalities.
  • Siamese cats are very intelligent and stately looking.   They communicate very well and use their raspy voices just to get attention!  Their stately appearance is due to their slim stature, athletic frame and short fur.  Siamese cats are also very loving and loyal to one owner.
  • The Abyssinian is said to be a descendant of cats worshipped in ancient Egypt.  With a thick, colored coat, the Abyssinians are very active and playful cats.
  • Ragdoll cats are also very popular because of their cuteness.  They grow very large like the Main coon, with males reaching up to 20 pounds and females up to 15 pounds.  “Raggies” are very docile so they may not be able to defend themselves against other animals that might want to attack them.
  • The Birman is a blue eyed cat with white paws that resemble white boots.  Their long and silky coat does not require much grooming, which makes them low maintenance.  They also have very even temperaments and fit in easily to any routine.
  • The American Shorthair cat arrived in the United States on the “Mayflower”.  These pure bred cats are good hunters and love the outdoors.  They are great with kids and have a very even and quiet temperament.
  • The Oriental cat is very similar in looks and behavior to the Siamese.  The main difference is that they come in two different hair lengths and over 300 different colors combinations.  And they don’t talk quite as loudly as the Siamese!
  • Rounding out the ten most popular cat breeds is the sphinx.  Although this naked cat has a strange appearance, they are still very loyal and loving.  They come in a wide range of skin colors and are very athletic.

From that list, you should be able to settle on a cat that will fit right in with your lifestyle!
