A lot of people do not think that cats have the same capabilities as dogs in terms of being trained.  However, cats can go through some very same training that dogs go through and still be able to perform what is required by the owners.  Toilet training cats is possible so they do not make a mess wherever they see an available space.  Although cats are generally clean animals that dispose of their waste cleanly, it would be very helpful if you also train them to use the toilet so they do not have to go outdoors to do it.

Here are some tips that you can to toilet train cats:

  • Put the cat box right next to your toilet for about a day.  This will help the cat get used to being near the toilet when they want to relieve themselves.  The next day, you can raise the litter box up one notch by putting it on a telephone directory or some other object.  This process should be repeated continually with a new object being placed under it each day until the box is the height of the toilet.  As you keep raising the box, you should also be taking out  little bit of the litter, which is what convinces cats that this is where they should actually use the bathroom.
  • With the litter box secured on to the telephone directory, start to move it over an inch at a time on to the seat of the toilet.  Repeat this task daily until the box is fully seated directly over the toilet seat.  While doing this, you should continue to decrease the amount of litter in the box until there is less than 1 inch left in it.
  • At this stage, your next step would be to lift the toilet seat and tape a bowl or metal pan to the edges of the bowl.  Put the seat down so it holds the container firmly in place, then add flushable litter.  By this stage, your cat would have gotten used to jumping on top of the toilet to relieve themselves.  Once they start doing so in the pan, then they are adequately toilet trained.  They may not necessarily be able to flush the toilet but getting them to use it is certainly very attainable.

So what are you waiting on?  Give it a try and see how well your cat adapts to using the toilet.
